Dementia is a complex disease. When designing for dementia, an understanding of the disease and its effect on people living with dementia is important. This can be achieved through empathy. Empathy means being able to see the world from someone else’s perspective. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how to use already existing empathy methods to develop empathy for people living with dementia. In this research two methods were used to gain empathy with the target group; first an empathy game was performed, followed by ethnographic interviews with 6 participants. The ten psychological needs as defined by Sheldon et al. (2001) have been used as a basis in the ethnographic interviews and to process the gained insights. These insights were passed on to a design team.
